Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection Review

The new Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection is already available at some Chanel boutiques. This year Chanel keeps surprising their audience with unexpectedly early releases. It is just September and we are still enjoying the mild basking September sun and gathering the last bits of September warmth. Yet, Chanel is already ready for the holiday season and most probably the Chanel spring will start in November ? Most certainly this new and unexpected holiday release is due to the fact that the Chanel 2020 Fall Collection was not accepted with great enthusiasm by most Chanel lovers. You can read about the puzzling marketing strategy of Chanel with respect to this year’s Holiday Collection in this blog post of mine.

Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection

Enough with the red color – it’s time to play safe with the new Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection

Lucia Pica who is the global creative makeup and color director for Chanel loves to be adventurous and to play with the red color but she did not take into account the fact that the majority of women associate the red color on the eyes with being sick.  Besides, we are all advised to wear masks for health protection and thus the wearing of a red eyeshadow on the eyes seems unacceptable for the majority of Chanel fans.

As a faithful Chanel lover I was quick to purchase the Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by some creations of Lucia Pica for this holiday season. She decided to play safe for this holiday season and created an elegant and classic collection that will suit beautifully most skin tones.

Illuminating Blush Powder Les Chaînes de Chanel

The Illuminating Blush Powder ‘Les Chaînes de Chanel’

The star of the new Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection is the illuminating blush powder which I expected to be too dark for pale skin tones like mine but it transpired that I was wrong. The illuminating blush powder ‘Les Chaînes de Chanel’ has a luminous rusty color that suits very well my pale skin tone.  So, I only need a couple of swipes on the cheeks to add color to my face. I have seen that this illuminating blush works very well for medium to deeper skin tones as well.

I am very happy with the fact that the ‘Les Chaînes de Chanel’ powder does not emphasize texture on the skin even though it is an illuminating blush because it doesn’t have a chunky glitter particles but it has sophisticated sheen. Still if you have a lot of dilated pores, make sure to be light-handed. It can be used very successfully as an eyeshadow as well – watch my YouTube video to see how it looks on my eyes.  The beautiful chain patterns are very easily destroyed once you start using the blush but that is to be expected.

The 4 Mono Eyeshadows in the Chanel 2020 Holiday Collection

I was very surprised that Chanel decided to release four mono eyeshadows instead of another ‘Les 4 Ombres’ palette. I was expecting from Lucia Pica to create a limited edition ‘Les 4 Ombres’ palette for the Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection. Recently Chanel have increased their prices and it is understandable that a lot of the Chanel lovers did not react positively to this move of Chanel taking into consideration the current situation which has made life much harder for many people.

Each mono eyeshadow retails at $36 which makes it quite an investment to get all four of them. Unfortunately,  3 of the 4 shades are not unique. I love all four colors and I think each of them is a great addition to one’s makeup collection. And if they were in a ‘Les 4 Ombres’ palette, this palette would have had most probably a phenomenal success but as mono eyeshadows most Chanel afficionados will skip them altogether or only pick one of them.

The 4 mono eyeshadows are Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow 925 OR ANTIQUE , Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow 926 OR BLANC, Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow 927 CUIVRE ROSE, and Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow 928 CUIR BRUN. All those eyeshadows have new interesting texture. They are illuminating eyeshadows and they do not have full coverage. They are best applied with fingertips to get more color.

This is a rich antique gold color. Unfortunately, it is very similar to the last year’s gold mono eyeshadow that was released from Chanel. I decided to skip last year’s gold mono eyeshadow and that is why I cannot provide comparison swatches.

Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Powder Eyeshadow 926 OR BLANC

This is a pleasing white gold eyeshadow that you can use on its own or as a highlighter in the inner corner of the eye. If you want, you can also use it as a highlighter on the face but it should be applied lightly. However, I would personally refrain from doing that.

927 CUIVRE ROSE

This is the only unique eyeshadow color in this collection because it is an exquisite rosy copper shade. It has a copper color with rosy pink glitter and it catches and reflects the light delightfully. It is best applied with fingertips. In my opinion, this is the only must-have product from the new Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection. If I had to choose only one piece of this collection, the Eyeshadow 927 Cuivre Rose would be it.

928 CUIR BRUN

This is a nice brown color which also has a little bit of green undertones. It is a good color to create a smoky eye. It has the slightest sheen and it can be used in the crease. However, it is not a unique shade. It does not have any shimmer but it has a very subtle luminosity.

My overall assessment

I really enjoyed the Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection.  However, I am adamant that  the 4 mono eyeshadows should have been included in a  ‘Les 4 Ombres’ palette. They are not unique enough to be mono eyeshadows. Unless you are a true Chanel lover, you could easily pass on them.

The illuminating blush powder ‘Les Chaînes de Chanel’ is a beautiful and collectible piece. It works for different skin tones but it does not get me too excited. I was more excited about its design.

I decided not to buy the 4 lipsticks ‘Rouge Allure’ which are also included in this Chanel Holiday collection. However, you can see them and read about them in this blog post of mine.

My verdict is that the Chanel 2020 Holiday Makeup Collection is not a failure. However, it is definitely not a stunning success either.
